The idea of starting an industrial activity on the Oglio
riversides, originates from the wiseness of the Cantonis,
textile enterprisers of the Milanese area, who mandated and
financed their thirty years-old resourceful collaborator,
Giulio Sacconaghi.
Besides the desire of creating prestigious companies of
important size, Eugenio Cantoni was even more interested in the
project of giving our Nation a complete emancipation from
foreign countries; for this reason he started fabrications
which, for the technical complexity of the relative productive
process, nobody in Italy had ever experienced yet.
Sacconaghi’s factory for velvets production situated in
Pontoglio, was one of the companies which Mr Cantoni became more
involved in.
The first twisting and weaving systems started to run on June
5th 1883 but, from that moment on, there were constant
investments to enlarge and innovate in a challenge that, after
more than a century, still characterizes what now is no more
called "Manifattura Pontoglio" but "Pontoglio S.p.A".
The company had a very proprietorial management for almost one
century: after the premature death of Mr. Sacconaghi, Pietro
Taschini succeeded. He had been a partner and a friend since the
beginning of the adventure in the velvet production and, in
1922, he changed the name of the company into "S.A. Manifattura
di Pontoglio Sacconaghi e Taschini", endowing it with a fund of
3 million lire. The years of World War II recorded numerous
variations in the company’s structure and in its organization;
in 1944 its name became "Manifattura di Pontoglio S.p.A.". This
denomination was maintained until 1985, when the firm joined the
Pecci Group from Florence.
The company was endowed with a more solid fund and changed its
name into "Pontoglio S.p.A.".
This represented the beginning of the "Modern Era" of the
company, which restarted to invest energies and resources.
Nowadays, "Pontoglio S.p.A." is a company that pays a great
attention to the technological innovation processes and to the
experimental researches on the product; this is the reason why
it is considered as a reference company in the production of
velvets and moleskins.
